Slam Jam Spring Showcase

10 am: Team 1 (White) 78, Team 2 (Black) 77

Kevin Heck (Skyward Christian) had 16 points, including the winning basket in the final minute as the White team prevailed by the slimmest of margins in the day's first game.

This one was a topsy-turvy affair as each team held a substantial lead before things evened out late in the game. The White team raced out to a 13-4 edge to begin the game, only to s
ee the Black team rally and tie the game at 21 on a three by Kristoff Thande (University). The Black team continued to roll, building a 14-point lead at 51-37 before the White team rallied, making it a back-and-forth as time wound down.

Justin Brooks (El Camino Real) led the way for the winners, posting a double-double w
ith 17 points and 12 rebounds. Heck had 16 points and 9 boards, while Nathan Pitts (El Camino Real) had 12 points and 4 assists. Stephen Smith (El Camino Real) had 8 points while pulling down 10 rebounds and grabbing 4 steals.

For the Black team, Thande had a team-best 13 points, including 3 threes. Tarek Fattal (Hillcrest Christian) had 11 points and Michael Dacey (Hillcrest Christian) had 10. A.J. Harb (Verdugo Hills) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds while Nick Arriagada (Alemany) dished out a game-high 9 assists.

11 am: Team 3 (Red) 93, Team 1 (White) 80

The phrase "Better late than never" certainly applied in this one as Van Girard (Gahr) arrived midway though the game with his team trailing by double digits but sparked a rally that led to a 13-point win in the second game.

Girard first entered the game at the 20-minute mark (of the 39-minute running-clock game) with his team trailing, 44-33. But even in his abbreviated time, he managed 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks. And his team outscored the opposition, 60-36, after his arrival.

Ramon Williams (
Bellflower) and Xavier Mudd (Etiwanda) each had 18 points for the winners. Girard's Gahr teammate Aaron Hicks chipped in with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

For the White team, Marcus Addy (El Camino Real) poured in a team-high 18 points. His high school teammate, Nathan Pitts, had a huge all-around game with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. And a third Conquistador, Justin Brooks, had his second straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Heck (Skyward Christian) also had 11 points.

Player Ratings

Players are evaluated using two statistical formulas, which are then combined to form a third statistical formula. All formulas are based on game statistics, ensuring their objectivity. The pace factor is obtained by adding up the number of possessions for both teams (fga+fta+turns) and dividing that by the average number of possessions per game in the showcase.

The first formula is a Performance Index, or "Perf". This is a slightly modified version of what is used at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago. This formula rewards production but also places a premium on efficiency.

The second formula is the Activity Rating Formula, or "ARF", which I created several years ago for use on my JCHoops.com site. ARF measures the activity or energy for the player. Even if a player's shot isn't falling on a particular day, he will receive a good rating just by taking the shots, grabbing the rebounds, etc.

These ratings tend to be more consistent from game to game than the Performance Index since (a) a player's energy is something he can control to a large extent, unlike whether his shot goes in and (b) good players tend to be in the middle of the action game after game.

Finally, there is a third rating which combines the first two ratings. To keep one of the first ratings from having a disproportional effect, the two ratings are calibrated. And all the ratings are adjusted for (approximate) minutes played.

This time, for the first time, I've added another component: a "pace factor". This is done to ensure that players aren't at a disadvantage when they play on teams that play at a slower pace with fewer possessions.

For a more complete (and technical) explanation click here: Explanation of Player Evaluations

Also, we've noted for each player whether he mostly played guard, forward or center. But position has no bearing on these ratings.

Note: Kevin Scroggins, the top-rated "Perf" player, played a relatively low number of minutes and only played in one game while most of the other players played in two games. This has been adjusted for in the combined rating.

Game Summaries

Format: Games were 39 minutes, running time. Starters and their positions are designated, but there were time-mandated substitutions so that all players played roughly the same amount of time (except for the Woodland Hills Young Guns team, whose coaches determined playing time). Free throws were shot under an abbreviated format: when free throws were awarded, the player would take just one shot and it was worth two (or three, if the player was fouled attempting a 3-point shot) points. If a player was fouled while shooting and made the basket, the "and-one" was given automatically. And finally, positions are indicated to get a general idea of who played where, but this was a showcase so many players played multiple roles and positions during the game.
